Domain History Lookup Guideline

Final Checklist after buying Domain Which is very, very important for new and unique Domain.

Before buying a new domain which subjects you must follow, and the main thing is domain previous history lookup.  Which domain name you are select to buy for your niches? You have to check if anyone uses that? Also, if it was using, previously you have to find out those things.

Basically, in this post, we learn how to check domain history properly. Also, if the domain of your choice has been used before, I will try to find out the aspects that should be considered before repurchasing the domain.

You can read this post on how to select a good domain name.

 What is Domain history?

If you find an available domain that you can purchase but, You don’t think that is a fresh domain for your niches.  Right now in the world, appromaxtly 1.9 billion domains are active ( Source), and day by day, it is increasing rapidly.

As new domains are registered every day, some domains expire also. So, the domain you selected should be used earlier, not a notable one.

It is possible to know if the domain name you have chosen is absolutely fresh, or if someone has used it before, by checking the history of that domain.

Why necessary to check domain history?

Before we know exactly why the domain history needs to be checked, let's find out why the domain has expired.

A domain can expire different causes. Such as:

  1. Maybe the domain owner doesn’t want to continue their website.
  2. When a domain is contacted for a business, the business closes and the domain can no longer be renewedProbably the domain owner dies, and no one renews this domain.
  3. Probably the domain owner forgot to renew the domain.
  4. In the past, someone using this domain for spamming and after finishing their tasks, he/she didn’t renew the domain.
  5. In the past, someone using this domain as a PBN site and, after that, he/she doesn’t renew the domain.
  6. Maybe the domain has previously received a penalty / AdSense ban from Google and, the domain owner has not renewed it.

Without this method, there are many causes to expire domain.

However, if a domain has expired due to any one of the 5, 6 and 7 reasons mentioned above, Then it is undoubtedly a poor quality domain. You should never buy such a domain.

Exactly why a domain has expired can only be understood by checking its history. And in the future, the domain history should be checked so that there is no impact on the SEO of the website due to the domain.

How to check domain history?

After finding the preferred domain name, you first need to check its Whois record. To do this, first, go here and enter the domain name and click the Get History button. Then all the previous Whois history of that domain will come.

Domain History Checker

I have checked the history of “ https://www.theshimul.com/” domain as an example in the picture above. No one has registered this domain yet. That is, it is a completely new domain. Congratulations if you see similar results for your preferred domain. You don't need to check anything else; you don't need to read this article anymore. Feel free to buy that domain.

But, what if you have a previous history? See image below –
Domain History Checker

Here, as an example, I checked the history of this domain mybestwalkingshoes.com. The domain was first registered 10 years ago and has been dropped 1 time so far. So simply say drop here; the domain was expired 1 time.
Such used domains are basically called expired domains. Since this domain has been used before, there are several things you need to consider before purchasing it.

Check the previous content of the domain;
First, go to the site "https://web.archive.org/". If you search with the domain URL in the search box, it will show its previous history. See the picture below –

Clicking on the dates marked here will show the status of the website on that date.

Note: "archive.org" site can be blocked in Bangladeshi IP. In that case, you need to access using a VPN.

Take a good look at the following:

1.       Check if there was any content in the Chinese / Japanese language before. If so, exclude that domain. Such sites are more likely to be used as spam in the past.

2.       Try to understand if the domain has been used as a PBN before. For example, spinned / autogenerated articles (messy type articles), multiple category posts; if you have these, you can assume that it was PBN before. If you find something like this, delete that domain as well.

3.       If your planned niche does not match the previous contents of the domain, it is better to omit it. It is not necessary. You can take that domain if you want. However, I personally exclude such domains.

4.       Check to see if the domain was previously redirected to another site. You can understand it only by looking at the archive well. Or you can take the help of Moz. “https://analytics.moz.com/pro/link-explorer/home” Go to the link, enter the domain and click the Analyze button. If there are any redirects,

It will look like the image below –

If the domain has previously been redirected to another domain, delete it.

If your domain passes the 4 steps mentioned above, then go to the next step –

Check the previous backlinks and anchor text of the domain;

You can use any of the tools to check the backlinks and anchor text of a domain. Below are the addresses of the two free tools –

1.       https://ahrefs.com/backlink-checker (it's completely free)

2.       https://moz.com/link-explorer (You can search 10 domains per month by opening a free account.)

Things to keep in mind when it comes to backlinks –

1.       It is best to check every backlink in the domain manually. Check to see if backlinks have come from any spammy / adult / low-quality sites.

How to recognize spamming backlinks?

2.       A link from a site in the Chinese / Japanese language can actually be considered as a spam link.

3.       If you have too many auto-approved comment backlinks, you can catch them as spam.

If there is such a backlink in the domain, delete it.

1.       If any other domain is redirected to that domain, delete it.

2.       You will also see the anchor texts of the links while viewing the backlinks. So if you see irrelevant encrypted text, then there is no need to take that domain.

The following is an example of such anchor text in the image –

Check if there is an AdSense ban

You can use this website to check if the domain has AdSense ban - https://adsensechecker.com/

The following is an example:

AdSense Checker

See how many times the domain has been dropped.

Even if you get a positive result in each of the above steps, this step should not be avoided. If the domain has been dropped too much, it is better not to take it. The first reason for this is - more drops means more work was done on the domain. If it is dropped 1-2 times, it may be acceptable. But if it is dropped more than twice, I would advise not to take it.

If you keep in mind the above-mentioned things, I hope you will be able to buy a suitable domain. However, if you are new to blogging, then my advice would be to start working on a completely new (fresh) domain.

Answers to some common questions

1.       Do I need to see the Spam Score before buying a domain?

Spam Score is basically a score given by MOZ. Google has nothing to do with it. If the above-mentioned issues are correct, then there is nothing to be tense about spam score. After starting the site, if you do some good quality backlinks, you will see that the spam score will decrease. This metric works a lot like this - let's say a domain has 3 backlinks, of which 2 links come from sites that have a spam score of more than 70%. In that case, the overall spam score of your domain will show much higher. But if you create backlinks on 100 quality sites as opposed to those 2 low-quality backlinks, then on average, that spam score will go down a lot. Moreover, you have the Disavow Links option.

2.       What if I don't show any history in the archive of the expired domain?

If you do not show any history in the archive, you can assume that the domain has not been worked on before. Someone might have bought it and left it. In this case, you can check the backlinks and other things.

3.       I bought a domain that I didn't check my history with before I bought it. What to do now?

Since you have purchased the domain, try the above mentioned things if possible. If you find anything negative, my advice would be to start working on another new domain instead of the domain. If you have content on the site, you can delete it, remove it from the search console and then republish it to the new domain. If you are very confused, you can take the advice of an experienced person.
